Field Sketching Workshops

Join an experienced scientific illustrator for a series of guided field illustrations workshops at the Hastings Natural History Reservation in Carmel Valley. We are offering a total of three workshops in Spring 2025. All our workshops will be taught by the incredible Megan Gnekow of Seven Ravens Studio. Megan is a freelance scientific illustrator and is deeply committed to conservation and land stewardship. Since the age of 5, she has been observing, exploring, and illustrating the plants and animals of California’s ecosystems.

Two Day Workshop: April 19-20, 2025: $400

Learn how to draw from life and record the details of organisms you observe with plenty of time to get to know the Reserve. Weather conditions will guide the instructor’s exact location choice to assure you’ll have the chance to observe a diverse array of organisms. You will learn about various species on the Reserve, practice field sketching and painting techniques, and hone your observational drawing from live creatures in their environment. You will have time to work on multiple drawings or sketches using different techniques, and gain skills using pencil, gouache, and watercolor on various papers. After the first day in the field, we will have time to share sketchbooks and discuss triumphs and challenges from the day. On the second day, we will delve more into color and how to capture light and shadow to create form. You will work toward an in-depth study of a plant or flower using watercolor.

The course fee includes catered meals (4/19: Dinner; 4/20 Breakfast and Lunch) and overnight accommodations in Hastings’ historic (rustic) houses. Participants will sleep in shared rooms (2-4 people per room), and tent camping sites are also available. This fee also covers supplies chosen by the instructor specifically for field illustration. You will also required to bring some basic supplies to class.

We can only allow for a maximum of 15 participants.

THIS CLASS IS CLOSED-but we still have space in the 1-day workshops below.
